Owen's First Birthday (The Party)

I emerged from my extended Nyquil coma to find that our blog has fallen into disrepair. Photos? Unposted. Updates? Undone. Caption jokes? Unmade. I don't know where I got it, but I brought it home and it spread. Then came the pink eye (luckily that stayed with Max). Then came the vertigo (which got Christy this time). I figure once the giant swarm of locusts is done eating our landscaping we'll be out of the woods.

While we huddle inside, I suppose I can try to do some catch-up work. Turns out that when Owen turned one we actually decided to throw him a party. We should probably talk about that.

Unfortunately, the poor little guy was suffering from a post-sick rash. Fortunately, it cleared up just before the big day.

But not before I got some photos.

The weekend started with the arrival of Nan and Papa.

Max was indifferent about seeing them.

A short sleepy night later, and we were off to the races.

Excuse me? I can't hear you. There's some kid outside my window screaming something about this not being my car.

Owen spent most of the day not knowing exactly what was happening. This meant that he basically just did what he normally did in front of an audience.

I have no explanation. It just is.

It also meant that lots of people got to take him off our hands for a little while.

I am flying. It is fun. Whee.

Max, of course, spent the bulk of his time taking advantage of the fact that he had buddies to play with.

Rest assured, no trouble was happening when I arrived to snap a photo.

Moving right along, we decided it was time to start in on the main event.

Owen started in a little early, but we forgave him his tissue paper thievery.

Max was happy to help out, and even more happy to play with the toys when we were done.

WHO BROUGHT THE BABY EATING BAG?! THIS IS NOT FUNNY.

Ta da. Mr. Serious strikes again.

Once Max had claimed his share of the bounty, we moved into the other room to serve up some sweet, delicious cake.

So delicious. Customized, just for you little guy!

Try it! You'll like it!

Can't say we didn't try.

Once the mess was cleaned up and the guests had departed, we piled into the car and set out for a long sit in the traffic that leads to the annual balloon festival.

Excited about balloons or not, traffic is boring.

Thankfully, we arrived barely in time to see the balloon launch.

Just in time!

Clearly this event was much more exciting for the older of the boys, as Max had plenty of opportunities to entertain himself.

For example, eating all of Owen's blueberries.

…and playing with static electricity…

…and dancing with his cousin…

When all was said and done, we headed back home and collapsed in a heap. All that was left was the inevitable aftermath of a one year old's birthday party.

Bubbles!

Everywhere!

We wished the grandparents farewell and settled back into our routine, punctuating the weekend with one last appearance of a summertime friend.

Backyard wading pool!

Owen and Max love kicking water at each other in the tub. This carries over to any body of water. Note: MORE BUBBLES.

Thus ended the big birthday weekend. Despite the rash and the cake fiasco, I'd have to say it went pretty well. Now all we have to do is get ready for the next party in November.
