We decided to take it a little easier during the week after our horrifying visit to the hair torturer. We managed to relax a little, but that didn't stop things from moving inexorably forward.
For Max, the week was all about finishing out his role as a Wiggle Worm at school. This meant a full purge of everything that's disappeared over the last couple months or so.

Hey, that's where that shirt went!

For Owen, it was yet another week about us patiently trying to figure out what things he's willing to put in his mouth (besides toys, fingers, shoes, random things he finds on the ground...) so we can finally stop buying things in jars.

Will I eat? I don't know. I'm considering it. Just be patient.

…15 minutes later…

I kid, of course. He's getting better. We just have to figure out the correct order to present things and the appropriate things to keep hidden until the very last possible moment. The biggest offender on that last front is the banana, which he now seems to know by name ("nanana"). So yellow, so visible, so sticky, so delicious.

Random Nan appeasement photo! (she bought them some matching stuff)

To continue the theme of food, we took the kiddos out to a neighborhood ice cream party so Max could stuff himself with some sugar before bedtime. We took it as an opportunity to break out the wagon, which meant that Owen got his first chance to take a ride.

He found a creative way to manage his inability to dislodge his sippy from the cup holder.

You didn't see that. I did nothing.

Somehow we failed to snap any photos at the party, but that didn't deter us from capturing a little more material for what seems to be turning out to be a food blog.

About a month ago, Max asked me what one of the buildings was when we passed it on the way to school. I explained to him that it was a Chinese buffet, and from then on he kept shouting out its name as we passed it and insisting, "I like Chinese food!" We were skeptical, as he's always been averse when we took him for Asian cuisine. Eventually it came time to relent, so we took him to a larger buffet down the road. Predictably, much of the food turned out to be a bust for him, but he was extremely interested in what daddy was doing.

I want to eat with the sticks!

The novelty lasted for about three or four bites. Oh well, maybe when he's a little older.

I assure you that we didn't spend the entire week just eating.

See? Owen played in a box of balls, too!

Of course, he's not always so happy to have his photo taken...

I WILL DESTROY YOU.

Plenty of playtime, not as much screaming in a barber chair, and lots of food. I'd call that a successful week. If you want to see the rest of the photos, you can click here. I guess I should probably try to get us caught up before our big trip this week. We'll see if I can pull that off.

We were having a conversation about keeping things up to date around here, and my lovely wife mentioned to me that in my attempt to capture Owen's 11 month blog I somehow managed to neglect everything else that happened two weeks ago. Clearly this issue must be rectified immediately.

Of course this means that I'm now behind again, but what else is new?
      We'll begin with the doooooOOOOOOOOOM!

After 11 months of hard work, Owen finally managed to grow enough hair to reach his eyes. This of course meant that he would be forced to endure his latest rite of passage.

That weekend we went to what we thought was his last week of Little Gym (turns out we had a week left). Due to that mistaken impression, we decided to snap a bunch of photos of the big guy during his "last" foray into the gym.

We closed out the week with what has become our new standard. Used to be we'd take off from Little Gym and head to Max's favorite deli. Until recently, this didn't seem to be a palatable option for Owen, so we've modified our routine to include a little barbecue.

Turkey! Pretty good week, I'd say. Now we just have to figure out what to do with our Saturday mornings from here on out.

Believe it or not, the little guy turned 11 months old on Sunday. In just a few short weeks we'll be working like crazy to clean up the house in preparation for a birthday party. Until then, we'll probably just try to keep a baseline level of cleanliness (just short of how-did-a-tornado-get-in-here) and make sure that we don't get behind on this thing.
A new month of course means new photos!

His brother is starting to take a shine to him, and occasionally spends a little time entertaining him.

As is our custom with these two, we sat Owen down in the chair for some monthly update photos. He was actually fairly well behaved this time around.

They go berserk. It's a commentary on society.

He pretty much spent the second half of the session holding books in front of his face.

As for his development, he's still working hard to keep his brother competing for attention. Meals are our big focus right now, and it's a polar affair. He's either perfectly alright with eating (for example, stuffing his face with chicken noodle soup this evening) or he's screaming for something different (for example, abruptly stopping the aforementioned face stuffing because he saw someone else eating a cracker). There is no happy medium. We'll keep working on it.

He maintains his brother's early tradition of being staunchly opposed to hats. He has the good fortune of growing up in the bigger house, which affords him a slightly more expansive baby cage (read: pretty much half of the upstairs). This pleases him, because he can speed down the hall and wonder why all the doors are closed before returning.

He also seems to enjoy dancing, and has no problem rocking whenever he sets off one of his extremely loud music toys. He's also getting really good at cruising along the furniture (including, much to my chagrin, the entertainment center). His ability to open cabinets has forced me to remove the knobs from said center, which is a bit of an inconvenience for us but well worth it to keep him from slamming the doors. Repeatedly. All day long.

As far as comparing to his brother, he seems to have an enjoyment of Baby Boo, but doesn't quite appreciate it on the same level as his brother did. He's also not quite ready for the wheelbarrow walker thing Max was cruising around with, though we'll probably give him a shot at it over the next few weeks. He's also a much more physical kid than Max was. He's taken to climbing into the jumpolene, which is quite the feat. The only problem is that he's also taken to climbing out of the jumpolene...which generally means landing on his head and doing a roll onto the floor. While I wince at it, he generally shakes it off and runs off to steal his brother's puzzle pieces.

I guess that's about it, so we'll just close it out with a link to what Max was up to at 11 months. We'll be back next week with regularly scheduled programming. Should be interesting, since Max and I have a couple of days of daddy/son stuff coming up at the end of the week.

Hooray! By posting on Saturday I'm actually getting a technically on-time post for the first time in weeks (perhaps months). It wasn't a terribly busy week, but somehow that didn't stop us from snapping quite a few photos (not to mention a few videos).
It all began with a realization that we hadn't done very many art projects at home with Max. We remedied the situation by picking up some new finger paints from the store.

Washable, washable. Please be washable. How did you get it in your hair anyway?

That night, I went to put the big guy down for bed and distracted him for a bit by pointing out some rabbits that were hanging out down the street. Little did I realize that he had a visitor hanging out on his window.

You lookin' at me?

Needless to say, Max thought that was pretty great. He asked to see it on the window for the next few nights. Sadly, it hasn't made a return visit.

The boys hung out a bit during the week, and Max felt the need to show off Mimi's talking parrot to Owen.

Owen is not impressed by your ability to repeat things, parrot.

Though if it hadn't been for that beak…

While not impressed with the parrot, Owen has taken a liking to another one of Max's toys.

Mr. Potato Head! Owen does, however, understand this...

Nyah.

Full frontal nyah.

He's not quite as consistently amused with it as his brother was, but he breaks it out every once in a while. I suppose he believes in comic timing rather than quantity.

The new bed continues to be a source of amusement for both boys. Owen generally comes in with me in the morning to wake Max up, and he rarely resists the opportunity to attempt climbing up on it. These attempts generally result in failure, but Max finds it funny.

Only problem with the bed is the haunting.

Owen usually scares it away, though.

That particular afternoon, Max decided that Owen was a little cold.

Wait for it…

Problem solved!

Owen was pretty tolerant of this behavior. He seems to be a good sport generally about that sort of thing. He's also getting be a pretty good sport about actually eating things we put in front of him.

We don't know why, but for some reason Dickey's is his favorite place to eat.

He also appreciated our rummaging through the closet to dig out something new (well, new to him).

Crazy tunnel!

As if that weren't enough excitement, we capped off the week with a visit from Max's buddy (who was feeling much better this weekend).

I assure you, they just calmly sat and read for several hours. It was nice.

Okay, maybe they played a little. The photo doesn't convey this at all, but Max had decided that Noah was a "bad guy" and was attacking the pirate ship.

The boys seemed to enjoy themselves, but really the most entertaining part (for them and us) could only be captured through the use of moving pictures.

Entertainment Level: Medium

Pretty fun. Could be funner.

Entertainment Level: WHOOOOAAAAAAA

Maximum fun achieved.

Just Because

I mentioned above that Owen is getting better about eating. Now we actually have evidence on film.

Eventually we'll get to the point where he can stuff an entire roll in his mouth without making squinty faces at us. Until then, we'll just have to endure somehow. Compared to other weeks, this one was pretty laid back. We didn't make any major trips out. Instead, we opted to hang out around the house and take advantage of our momentary lapse into calm.

Not sure what Owen thinks of that.

Amazingly enough, we managed to snap a few photos of the boys playing together for a brief moment or two.

Technically not playing, I know.

Kinda.

Here we are. Playing! Owen thinks it's hilarious when you're on the other side of the bars.

Awwww.

The one brief trip we did take out involved Max's buddy Mikey. Apparently Mikey wasn't feeling very well, but we joined up for a quick dinner so the boys could get a chance to see each other. The boys took a particular interest in a couple of extremely large birds that were hanging out around the front door. Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of them.

In the land of the little guy, we're slowly working our way away from jarred foods. He thinks this is alternately hilarious and horrible.

This fits in the former category.

Seeing as we're incapable of having a weekend without something crazy going on, we decided to make a quick stop at a nearby specialty store to get something for Max. He seemed pretty happy about it.

Super Toy Story Big Kid Bed!

Yep. We finally moved him up to the big leagues. He took to it surprisingly well.

Fine. He's faking. The real naps have been just as good.

He's also working hard to take advantage of the new bed as much as he can. Barely a day goes by that he doesn't insist that someone sleep in the bed with him. Mommy. Daddy. Owen. Anyone. Thus far he has been unsuccessful, though he has scored access to an extra stuffed animal to sleep on the other pillow.

If you want to see the rest of the photos, you can click here. If you want to see some videos, I guess I could stick to my promise from my prior post and squeeze some in here.

As is our typical pattern, we are late with this post. As is also becoming somewhat of a pattern, the reason is that we keep finding ourselves taking weekend trips to see grandparents without any down time in between. I guess it's tough to help ourselves, since the kids seem to enjoy themselves so much.
That's not to say we don't enjoy ourselves, of course. It gives us an excellent opportunity to show off the amusing things we find in our wardrobe.

It also gives us an opportunity to laugh at the way both of our sons react (a mixture of hyperactivity and glee) to small domesticated animals.

Not a bad way to spend a weekend, that's for sure.

Typically we try to cover the happenings of the week along with the weekend, but we didn't get very many photos to share for that week. We did manage to get this one, though, which illustrates how our lives are going to go for the next...I don't know, probably 18 plus years.

This does not belong to me!

Going to be fun teaching these two how to share.

If you want to see the rest of the photos from the week, you can click here. With any luck, our next round will include a nice video supplement. We shall see.

Fun fact: This post (a late one, per usual) marks the 200th we've made on this blog. A celebration of some sort is probably in order, but I think we'll mark the occasion by noting that it has happened.

Done.
Last weekend, we packed the kids into the car and headed up to Sherman for our annual triple birthday celebration.

Owen was…hey, is that a fan over there?

Better.

He also took the opportunity to show off some of his new-found skills.

Giving kisses, for example.

And, of course, eating crackers.

He made a point to bide his time until we felt the need to call the pediatrician about his eating habits. Only then did he begin to pretend that food was an acceptable thing to put in his mouth. This was in stark contrast to shoes, shirts, blocks, fingers, shoulders, and pretty much everything else he could get his hands on. Those were all chewed on with wild abandon.

At least we're seeing some progress. Maybe we'll even get him off the jars soon.

Our other son was content to sit (mostly) quietly at the table with his grandfather and cousin and build a log cabin.

Yep. That's where the door goes.

Then, before we headed out for the evening, Owen brought out the big guns.

NO ONE.

The rest of the weekend was pretty laid back. We hung out around the house and, per the demands of Max, pulled out an old favorite.

It's hard to believe that in a scant two months, baby Owen will suddenly cease to exist and be replaced by a one-year-old boy. This month has been filled with new developments, abilities, and of course a handful of difficulties.
As you all know, Owen has started to crawl. His progression from the belly crawl to full-on knees-down rampaging was swift, leaving us scrambling to make sure everything was appropriately baby proofed in the new house. His obsession with opening cabinets in the entertainment center is second only to his desire to rip night lights off the walls at any opportunity.

We're also getting a lot of this these days.

We also spent the better part of the month failing to introduce him to the concept of eating something that doesn't come from a jar. As of the last few days, he actually turned around and is starting to accept his self-sufficient fate. Before that, though, it was a steady stream of fussing and what one can only assume is some form of passive agressive malicious compliance.

You said to chew on it. I'm chewing on it.

As is our tradition, on the date of his monthly anniversary we wrangled him into a chair with a familiar stuffed animal and attempted to capture him on film. As with Max, this was the month this became really difficult.

Not to be shown up by this kid, I had a birthday of my own last week. In addition to the birthday wishes from Max (which are continuing, with singing, up to and including this morning) I was the recipient of a truly ludicrous amount of new camera gear. This of course meant that Owen would be subjected to extended sessions of me fiddling with apertures and shutter speeds while he attempted to play nearby.

Usually an extra day off makes things a little easier, but last week seemed just as long as any other. As a result, we slacked off quite a bit and found ourselves taking a much lower volume of photos. We did get some keepers, though.
On Monday, for example, I was watching Owen crawl all over the place while Max enjoyed a bit of TV. I was facing away from Max when I heard him say, "Hee hee heeeee". I quickly turned around, fearful that he'd been messing with something he shouldn't have...

Some looks never go out of style. Mr. Potato Head bowler hats, for example.

Owen continues in his refusal to delve into the world of finger foods, but he's trying to compensate in other ways.

…like learning how to give kisses to monkeys.

He also figured out a new trick in his crib. Gone are the days when simple wailing was his indication that he was awake.

Note the teeth marks.

With all the insanity that's been going on around here, we decided that it might be nice to go out for a slightly early birthday dinner. Mimi and Pappaw were gracious enough to come down and watch the kids while we did so.

By "watch", I of course mean "spoil with cupcakes".

I think that cancels it out.

They also made sure to bring a little gift to keep him busy while we're out.

He loves it. He found the volume control. He knows how to make sure Buzz Lightyear is yelling all the time. THANK YOU MIMI AND PAPPAW.

All kidding aside, Max had a great time (Owen couldn't tell us, but he seemed happy) and we actually got an opportunity to look like human beings for a change.

Fancy!

Of course, that was only a brief reprieve...

LOOK AT ME!

Ahh, back to parenthood. At least the steak was good.

I mentioned last week that it was going to take a while to get our Fourth of July post ready. I didn't realize quite how much we'd done that week until I reviewed the photos. I'll try to sum up as much as I can, but this is probably going to be a long one.
At the beginning of the week, Max got to experience something he'd been anticipating for quite some time. I think I'll let him tell you about it.

The Big Screen

Yep, first time.

He seemed to take it well, though personally I've been having recurring nightmares about Ned Beatty and an evil baby doll.

We put them down for bed and settled in ourselves for a bit before we started hearing the familiar reports of a nearby fireworks display. We ventured out into the backyard to see if we could see them. Sure enough, we could catch the big stuff over the fence line. This left us with a conundrum. Do we wake up Max and have a cranky boy on our hands in the morning?

The following morning we actually had some nice weather so we dragged the kids out of the house for some play time. We hopped in the car to go down to our nearby lake for some fishing, but we were stopped on the way to the dock by something we're not used to seeing in the wild.

As if that weren't enough, we decided to close out the week by whisking the boys away to Mimi and Pappaw's house for a little fun with the family. This manifested itself in a number of ways.

Still running behind by a week. Amazing how you can get an extra day off and still not manage to find the time to get a simple blog post done. Looks like the week we're covering was a week filled with firsts for the boys.
We began simply enough. Christy was alerted to the presence of a popular nearby snow cone stand and it was decided that Max should have one immediately. He had no idea what we were talking about.

He waffled a bit on flavors, but eventually decided that rainbow was the way to go.

Later in the week, though, we gave Owen the chance to try out something new. We'd picked up an array of solid foods for him to try out and he seemed to be rejecting pretty much all of them. This was our first shot at teething biscuits.

Around the house, things were pretty sedate that week. Owen continued to perfect his crawling, and found the easiest way to get our attention.

Both boys (after some prodding from Max) got to spend a little time in the shade of the house when we pulled out a familiar summer toy.

Good week. Nice and simple. If you want to see the rest of the photos from that week, you can click here. As for the more current post, that's probably going to take a little while. I have about 300 pictures to sift through, not to mention a number of videos.

Speaking of videos...

Laughter

Something's funny.

Ahh, thievery. He's growing up so fast.

During the previous weekend, we took some time to check out our local rec center. They have a cool indoor pool with a play set in it with all kinds of crazy splashing things. Unfortunately, the entire back wall is floor-to-ceiling windows, so photos turn out like this.

That would be Max going down a waterslide.

Up close photos of Owen turned out okay, though.

I just woke up. Where are we?

As you saw from the video from last time, the boys spent a little time wrestling around on the bed. More specifically, Max wrestled while Owen tried to figure out what was happening to him.

See: grin, devilish.

Max? Happy! Owen? Confused/terrified!

Then the big day came. Max's first Father's Day where he understood what was going on. I was awoken to him demanding that I open my present as immediately as possible. He didn't know what was inside. If he had, I'm assuming he would have opened it himself.

Thanks, Christy!

Obligatory silly dad shot.

The whole day, I could walk up to him and say, "I have a big shirt." He would eagerly respond, "And I have a LITTLE shirt!" It's hard to say who enjoyed the gift more.

We spent the afternoon up in Sherman, which of course meant some time in the pool. Unfortunately, Max wasn't really into the idea of the big pool. He preferred to chill with his little brother.

Yes, we lost the floaties shortly after taking this photo.

See?

As for Owen, he seemed content to just chase the various floating toys around the pool for a while. Before long, we were all back inside to fulfill Max's demands that he play some video games. Owen preferred to watch from the sidelines.

He seems to find the table more comfy than I'd expected.

I'd say it was a pretty successful Father's Day. Plenty of time with the boys, and now Max and I can match when he so desires.

To see the rest of the photos (actually, I think I only missed one), click here. Hopefully we'll have some new stuff to share (maybe even some videos) later on in the week.

A week late, but better than never. As of last week, the little guy is 9 months old. Life continues to grow increasingly interesting as the little guy's development moves along. Turns out he's not too different from his big brother.

He's still working hard to find just the right combination of facial muscles to attain maximum cuteness.

His hair is naturally like that.

Compared to his brother, he's a little behind on the standing bit, though that's certainly not for a lack of trying. One must simply wear pants around him to find out how much he wishes to be bipedal. Boy's got some mad pant leg climbing skills.

As is our tradition, we settled him in for his monthly photo session in The Chair.

As you can see, he's getting just as fidgety as his brother was at that stage.

It's actually sort of a good thing that we were behind on our posting, because now we have the official word from the doctor on this guy's measurements.

Height: 30 inches (95-97%)
Head: 18 inches (75%)
Weight: 19 pounds 13 ounces (25-50%)

Pretty much right on par with his big brother, but a tiny bit taller. Still just as tough as his brother, seeing as he only cried for a few seconds after the shot. Aside from that, at this point we've moved up to stage 3 chunky foods, with some attempts to get him to eat some little cereal puffs. He seems to enjoy picking up and looking at them, but apparently it's the only thing he will not put in his mouth. Toys, spoons, my fingers, remotes, controllers...all of them, in the mouth. Cereal...no. It's like he knows.

Sippy cups are a challenge of a different sort. He knows how to use them, but not how to control the process. The general end game is that he gets a little drink along with a generous shower. While amusing, this is not the sought after end result.

Amazingly enough, despite all this crazy we somehow managed to capture and process a number of videos to celebrate this occasion. They represent a little taste of life in our household.

Mama

He can do it, but he's a stinker about it.

Crawling

Well, sort of.

Bed

Sometimes we have a really long day. Then we try to put the boys to bed and something like this happens. Then we stay up a little later.

As you may have noticed (or not), I never quite got around to our catch-up post from the week after Memorial Day. Believe it or not, that week wasn't exactly eventful. Turns out all that running around will take all the energy right out of you. We did manage to snap a few photos of the boys, though, and we're happy to share those with you.

Ahh, distilled cute.

Owen's been working a little on his mobility, though he still needs a little help when it comes to pulling himself up on the furniture to stand. A little encouragement usually assists in keeping him there once he's found his footing.

Yep. Just like his brother.

THAT IS NOT HOW THE REMOTE WORKS.

Max is becoming impressed with his brother's newfound abilities, though he's starting to realize that this means Owen can play with a wider range of toys.

Here's the deal. If you see a toy, assume it's mine. Because it is. Good talk.

Seeing as it's been heating up, we found ourselves indulging in a little frozen fruit treat over the weekend. Max helped out, so naturally he got to partake in the proceeds.

Let's see. That's raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, and blackberry. Everywhere.

I believe the only other thing we managed to capture that week was Owen's graduation to a new eating apparatus.

Booster seat!

As you might imagine, he's pretty excited about it.

Like I said, kind of a laid back week. Click here for a few more photos. At least we're caught up to last week. I'll see what I can do about getting a 9 month post up for the little guy sometime soon.

Baseball

As I mentioned, he got a chance to run out on the field when the game was over on Friday night.

Fun Time with Aunt Jessica

The photo really just showed him hanging out on the floor. This will give you an idea of what he was really doing.

Jumping

Seriously. We've tried to get him to do this numerous times since then. No dice.
